There are some shops with touristy stuff in Stoupa, Agios Nikolaos and Kardamili.

Also it's nice to visit the old town center in Kalamata. Here you will find shops that sell herbs, freshly ground coffee and Orthodox church interiors. There is also a covered market place close to the central bus station.
Along the bustling sea front you will find plenty of bars and restaurants.
Instead of doing their evening stroll on foot a lot of young people do it by car, slowing down where all the people are sitting and speeding up where there are no terraces....only to turn straight back again at the little roundabout at Hotel Filoxenia!
